How We Source

We Don’t Buy from Brokers. We Go to the Source.

At Gomboc, every hide is selected in person, from family-owned tanneries in Kano where the craft of leather-making has been passed from father to son for centuries.

Inside the Tanneries That Supply Gomboc

These are not factories. They are living operations, run by families whose entire identity is bound up in the leather they produce. The master tanners we work with have spent decades — in many cases, their whole lives — learning how to read a hide, prepare it with precision, and finish it to a standard that endures.

That depth of knowledge is impossible to replicate on an assembly line. It is exactly what sets Gomboc leather apart in every market we serve.

How Gomboc Selects Its Leather

Every hide that leaves Kano under the Gomboc name passes through a deliberate, hands-on sourcing process built on trust, expertise, and direct partnership.

01 Direct Tannery Partnership

Gomboc maintains ongoing, personal relationships with a select group of tanneries in Kano. These are not transactional arrangements — they are long-term partnerships built on mutual respect. We know the families behind the leather. We understand their methods, their standards, and the pride they carry in their work.

02 On-the-Ground Selection

Our team visits the tanneries in person to select hides. We do not rely on samples or photographs. Each piece of leather is assessed by hand — its texture, weight, grain, and finish evaluated against the exacting quality standards Gomboc is known for. Only hides that meet our criteria make the cut.

03 Traditional Tanning Methods

The tanneries we partner with use traditional vegetable-tanning techniques passed down through generations. This slow, natural process — using plant-based tanning agents rather than harsh chemicals — produces leather with extraordinary depth, durability, and a character that only improves with age and use.

04 Generational Expertise, Every Step

From the initial preparation of the hide to the final finishing, every stage is carried out by craftsmen with decades of experience. Many learned from their parents, who learned from theirs. This continuity of skill means the leather Gomboc exports carries within it a standard of quality that no amount of modern technology can substitute.

05 Export-Ready Quality Control

Before any leather leaves for export, it undergoes a final quality check aligned with international market standards. We ensure every consignment is consistent, well-finished, and fit to represent Gomboc — and by extension, the proud tanneries of Kano — on the world stage.

“The leather Gomboc exports carries within it a standard of quality that no amount of modern technology can substitute. It is craft. It is legacy. It is Kano.”
